How to Find the Right ADHD Life Coach For You

ADHD coaches are different from therapy or counseling. Sometimes working with a therapist, psychiatrist, and ADHD coach can help one get on track faster and more efficiently. All three play very different key roles in understanding one's life, issues, obstacles, and assist in setting up a healthy path for your future.

Ensure They are a Properly Certified ADHD Life Coach

There aren't any guidelines or restrictions to someone advertising themselves on the internet as an ADHD life coach. While interviewing, it is important to ask what the coach's education was, where it was obtained, and the level of certification the coach completed. It is important to find an ADHD coach that is certified and accredited and recognized by the ICF, which is the international coaching federation. A fully certified and accredited life coach may cost up to $26,000 for their education. It can also include 350 hours of coursework and 200 hours of coaching. The coach sends in recordings to get verification and accreditation by their institution. Children and families require a different level of certification as well. If you are searching for an ADHD coach for your child, make sure the coach has education in family coaching and is certified to coach children eight to eighteen.

Understand Your Goals For Coaching

What type of coach do you think your needs ask for? Are you looking for someone with a similar background or life experience? Are you also struggling with other commodities that you’re dealing with that you’d like for your coach to specialize in? Think about the type of goals you would like to work on. Whether it's executive function, relationships, social skills, or workplace goals.

Visualize Your Ideal ADHD Life Coach

A good coach can help educate you on your own brain wiring and ADHD. Understanding how your own ADHD plays out within you is very important. They can help you move away from a negative cycle and help you become more self-aware. They can assist you with negative to positive self-talk, self-awareness, finding out your obstacles and where you might be sabotaging yourself. They help you dig deeper so you can figure out what is holding you back and change this pattern to proceed forward. It is important to connect and feel comfortable with your coach. It is important to form a relationship so the client can open up and break down some of the layers to a more vulnerable place. You want someone caring and empathetic, who can also be strong to you when needed. They should be able to hold you accountable and allow you to peel back the layers of life's conditioning.

Research, Research, Research

You can find a list of certified ADHD coaches on ADDCA, the ADHD coach academy, or ACO which stands for ADHD coaches organization. Most coaches offer a complimentary discovery call to see if you feel comfortable proceeding forward with them.

Choose Your ADHD Life Coach

It’s essential to review a few profiles and possibly set up a few discovery calls to see who you most align with. For the best results, it is researched and documented, three months of weekly coaching will give one the best results. However, at any point during that time if you don't as though you are connecting or growing with your coach, please feel comfortable discussing this with your coach. You want to leave a session feeling lighter, more clear-headed, less frazzled, and excited for the future. It's also crucial for the client to be prepared to practice mindfulness and do the self-work to change things in their life or complete their goals.
